Inspiration from the Pastors

Rain

The sound was almost a roar in my ears. This was my long weekend to relax and get away from…well…everything. Friday was beautiful. Saturday, not so much. It seemed God was dumping buckets…well…everywhere! The metal roof sounded like it was being hit with nails. Out from under of the protection of the roof, walls, and windows, which was a pretty view to look at, was a literal sheet of water. Did you hear? We have had record-breaking rainfall this year with 44 inches of rain since October, and we aren’t even done with April! ENOUGH!

God chose this path
Then came Sunday. I met a man on Sunday who, since childhood, has had two major goals in his life, to play professional baseball and to be a television sports commentator. He has done both and has seven Emmy Awards to prove it. Speaking to him, he says he had a “Forrest Gimp” type of life. He has met and played sports with more celebrities and sports stars than most could dream of. He’s played football with Snoop Dogg and baseball with the Jonas Brothers. He has pinch hit for baseball legend Darryl Strawberry and tried out for both the Dallas Cowboys and the Minnesota Vikings…all with no legs.

I invited this man, Mr. Dave Stevens, to speak with the SOAKED Kids on Sunday and one of the them asked, “Do you miss your legs?” Yes, I was nervous they would ask questions which might offend, but Mr. Stevens answered immediately. He said God chose this path for him and he likely would not have met his two goals if he had legs. With no legs he is who he was created to be. I cannot say I have ever met a stronger man.

Story after story came from him and I was mesmerized. The word CAN’T is not in his vocabulary. From early life his adoptive parents made him do everything by himself. Once, during junior high, he was playing outfield and when reaching for a foul ball, it hit his nose instead of landing in his mitt and blood was everywhere. He thought, “I never want to play this game again!” Later, his friends helped teach him to catch with tennis balls. He fell in love with the game and the rest is history… Well, not quite. His biggest fight to play sports was with his school. He had to convince them he was healthy enough to play. He won that fight and went on to letter in wrestling (he was 2nd in the state of Texas), baseball, AND football. There is a ton more to that story, but you will have to wait for the book (coming soon).

Choose to love
We live in probably the most beautiful country in the world and it is green because of all this rain. We can’t change the rain, just like Mr. Stevens can’t change the fact that he doesn’t have legs, yet he doesn’t complain. He changes what he can – he changed his attitude. Our Lord sends the rain and I am going to choose to love the rain because it makes His beautiful countryside green!

Acts 14:17
But he has given proof of what he is like. He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven. He gives you crops in their seasons. He provides you with plenty of food. He fills your hearts with joy.

Let us rejoice in what He has given us! For we are mightily blessed!
